Cataract Surgery: Lens Replacement Surgery
A cataract is the clouding of the eye’s natural lens, diminishing vision and causing sensitivity, double vision, and images to appear blurry or with less color. Some cataracts may be corrected with prescription glasses, but the most common and effective form of treatment is cataract surgery.
To determine whether you have a cataract, our team will begin by reviewing your medical history and symptoms and performing an eye examination. If cataracts are confirmed, we’ll discuss treatment options, which are typically either traditional cataract surgery or laser cataract surgery. During both types of surgeries, the lens that has developed the cataract is removed and replaced with an intraocular lens, but their approaches differ.
Traditional cataract surgery is performed by using a precision blade to make incisions in the eye. An ultrasonic probe is then used to break up and remove the cataract. Finally, the intraocular, or artificial, lens is inserted in place of where the cataract-clouded lens was. This is an out-patient operation with a recovery time of only a few weeks. Vision improvement may be noticed immediately but optimal vision is noticed up to one month after. This type of cataract surgery is extremely safe and one of the most commonly performed operations
Laser cataract surgery is exactly how it sounds; rather than a blade being used to make incisions in the eye, a laser is used to make computer-controlled incisions and gently clear the cataract lens. In comparison to traditional cataract surgery, this procedure is less invasive, more precise, and can be personalized to each individual and their optimal vision.
Additionally, we offer different types of intraocular lenses used to further the success of both types of treatments. The Southwest Eyecare team will guide each patient in choosing the best option for them, their vision, and overall lifestyle.
